TRAVEL INSPIRATIONS
"Once a year, go somewhere you've never been before." The Dalai Lama
Milford Sound
Milford Sound is the kingdom of New Zealand fjords.
A magical and beautiful bay, but at the same time one of the rainiest places on earth. On average, it rains here for over 230 days a year, so statistically just 1 in 3 days it happens rainless.
But don't let it put you off and it's worth seeing this place with your own eyes.
Milford Sound Bay
The bay is 20 km long and it is surrounded by steep shores, approx. 300 m high, therefore it resembles fjords. There are hundreds of waterfalls and there is often fog over the water. It is magical, a bit mysterious. You can relax wonderfully.
Cruise on Milford Sound
Milford Sound is explored by boat, catamaran or small boats. There are several companies that organize cruises. The cruise takes approx. 3 hours. During the cruise, in addition to admiring waterfalls and fjords, you can also spot dolphins (dusky dolphins), seals, and, if you are lucky, even whales.
For the cruise, be sure to bring a raincoat and something to change if you plan to get wet by the waterfall (there aren't many such daredevils, but they do happen :-)).
How about a trip from Ta Anau to Milford Sound?
There are over 100km to the nearest city from Milford Sound. We decided to buy a trip from the town of Ta Anau https://www.fiordlandtours.co.nz/our-tours/milford-sound-fiordland-extraordinaire/. It was a great choice because we stopped in addition to Milford Sound still in a dozen or so beautiful places. The trip lasted 10 hours in total, but was neither tiring nor boring.
