Our journey

We toured New Zealand from Milford Sound  on  noon  South Island to Auckland in the north of North Island.

We drove nearly 3 thousand. km, and we walked, mainly up the hill,  over 390 km, because in New Zealand you always go uphill :-).

All this in 20 days.

The slogan "Six pack coming soon. New Zealand" took on something special for us  meaning.

Below are the most important points of our trip in the order in which they were visited.

QUEENSTOWN

If you plan to explore all of New Zealand, it's best to start or end your trip in Queenstown.
From here it is also relatively close to Milford Sound.

MILFORD SOUND

Milford Sound is the kingdom of New Zealand fjords. A magical and beautiful bay, but at the same time one of the rainiest places on earth. On average, it rains here for over 230 days a year, so statistically  just 1 in 3 days  it happens rainless.
But don't let it put you off and it's worth seeing this place with your own eyes.

WANAKA

A small town on a big lake. Famous for the Wanaka Tree, Roys Peak Mountains and the beautiful walking routes around the Blue Pools.

ROYS  PEAK

Roys Peak 1578 meters above sea level. A wonderful one-day climb for everyone. There are no difficult sections, but the views are beautiful all the time. Entry takes approx. 3-4 hours, the entire trip takes 6-8 hours.

HOOKER VALLEY

Hooker Valley is a wonderful valley in AORAKI / Mount Cook National Park at the foot of Mount Cook.  Hanging bridges, gentle slopes, pure relaxation.  The walking route is approx. 10 km long, and it takes approx. 3 hours to complete it at a free walking pace.

KAIKOURA

Seals, black and rocky beaches, rocky shores and bird colonies.
Nature, oh nature ...

WELLINGTON

The capital of New Zealand. It is located in the south of the North Island. The perfect stopping point after or before the ferry crossing between the North Island and South Island of New Zealand.

OHAKUNE

We stopped in Ohakune because we were planning to trek -  Tongariro Alpine Crossing (19 km).
Unfortunately, the weather was not good, so we looked for another attraction. We went for a walk with the alpacas :-).

WAI-O-TAPU

Geothermal park near the town of Rotorua.
WITH  fairy-tale colorful hot springs and a tiny Lady Knox geyser.

TE-PUIA

Also a geothermal park near Rotorua town, but completely different from Wai-O-Tapu.
Here is primarily the Maori open-air museum as well   the largest geyser in New Zealand - Pohutu Geyser - shooting water at a height of about 20-30 m.

ROTORUA

Rotorua is a city considered to be the geothermal capital of New Zealand, where over 30% of its inhabitants are Maori.
A peculiar city because of the ubiquitous smell of hydrogen sulphide, reminiscent of the smell of rotten egg.
Fortunately, you can get into this unpleasant stench relatively quickly   getting used to it and staying there for even a few days, and it's worth it, because it's a great starting point for Wai-O-Tapu, Te Puia and Hobbiton.
And there are beautiful black swans :-).

HOBBITON

Hobbiton is the original movie set from The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. Fans  Tolkien's trilogy will surely delight you. Others will be able to admire the meticulousness with which film props are created and what an illusion is what we see on the screen. I recommend it to everyone who would like to feel the magic of movies.

COROMANDEL BEACHES

Beautiful wide beaches separated by a hill with a viewpoint. So there is a place to walk and laze.

CATHEDRAL COVE

A tiny beach with a heavenly view, surrounded by amazing rocks.
The beach is divided into two parts between which it is  "rocky  window "shown in the photo above.
To get to this place, you either have to walk about 45 minutes on a gentle, mountain trail, or take a boat here.
Did I mention that in New Zealand it's uphill everywhere, even to the beach? :-)

AUCKLAND

The most famous city of New Zealand. We didn't have time to visit it, but New Zealand delighted us so much that maybe there will still be an opportunity to come back here.
